Outfit Post: 1950's Style Wrap Dress

I absolutely LOVE this dress.  It is one of my favorites yet I have only worn it twice.  I am sure, now that the weather is getting ...eh...no IS warmer, I will wear it more often.  The only thing I do not like is that it is sleeveless and I HATE my arms.  It would look so much better without the sweater.  Oh well, it is not the cute little dress's fault I HATE my arms.

It is of the 1950's wrap dress style.  Comfortable, cool, stylish, and very flattering. 

I picked this up second hand for about 10 bucks....I am pretty sure it was not much more than that.  The white eyelet sweater is perfect for my sleeveless and sun dresses, very thin and the eyelet design makes it very summery. I think.  I bought that at Ross.  The bangles I bought at an antique store, the silver chain was my anniversary present, I love the the lock says T &Co....who doesn't love Tiffany's and what a bonus that it just happens to be my name...talk about personalised!!!!

The 1950's style of wrap dress is a bit different from the much more "talked about" Diane Von Furstenberg style of wrap dress. 

"A climax to the American sportswear wrapping tradition came in the 1970s via the sensation of Von Furstenberg's wrap dress. Its fundamental form was already deeply embedded in the American designer sportswear tradition; a new woman designer translated the style into 1970s fabrics and colors, generally brighter, bolder, and more synthetic (and stretchy) than the early examples to which the silhouette and design principle are indebted." I have worn "wrap" style dresses for as long as I can remember.  They are very flattering to a fuller figure.  Also, they are very forgiving as I go up and down sizes (ALL. THE. TIME.)

Shabbat Dinner: Chicken and Waffles???!!!??? And a new - old skirt

I decided to do something different for out Shabbat dinner last night.  I made, what is becoming a rather trendy dish around here, Chicken and Waffles in a rather "Semi-Homemade" kinda way.  Sandra Lee would have been proud.

Around this part of the world, to get the best chicken and waffles you had to go to Big Mama's Chicken and Waffles over near the Forrest Lane / Audelia Road intersection.  That is until I tried my hands at it. 


I had a dream about this dish and nothing else would do until I sank my teeth in it.  Low carb dies be darned, I was ready to cheat and cheat in the worst way.  I emailed The Hubbie, hoping he would talk me out of it...but true to form, he was ready for a treat, too.  So the plan was for him to drive me over to the not-so-safe area to pick some up for dinner.  By the time he got home from work and I got home from treasure hunts, the traffic was bad.  I devised another plan.

I decided that I would take out my Pyrex mixing bowls, make the waffles at home with the waffle maker (that I had never used), and pick up a bucket of chicken from KFC.  The plan was set.

 Since dinner was going to be so easy to make and rather untraditional, I took a bit of effort and made homemade Challah.

Now on to my outfit....  I found a skirt I must have bought 4 or 5 years ago.  It is about 2 sizes too big but will be easy to alter.  I can not decide if I like to blouse tucked in or left out.  Until I get a belt and take it in a few sizes, I will leave it out.  What do you think?

 Dinner was amazing.  Absofreakinlutly Wonderful.  Not something we can have often, unfortunatly.

Outfit Post and a New - Old Phone

I have been so busy this week that I have not been able to check in as often as I am used to.  I am selling some things on eBay and so far so good with that.  I have not sold everything listed but I am happy with the outcome, so far.  I get pretty excited when there is a bidding "war" over something.  I have not had many of those and well...what I call a "war" might leave some questioning...I am such a newbie that a "war" to me is when more than one person is bidding.  LOL.

Anyway...on to my new goodies.  A few weeks ago I won this phone in my own bidding "war" on eBay.  I got it for 10 BUCKS!!!!  SO happy about that.  I have seen them at antique malls, stores, etc for about 5 times that and going up from there.  It looks perfect in our kitchen and it hides a very ugly wall phone jack.  I have been looking for something to hide that for awhile.  We do not use it so the phone is just ornamental.

My dress is a very thrifty gem.  It was bought band spankin new from Lane Bryant ...so how can THAT be thrifty, you ask?  Well let me tell you.  Last week they had a sale of 40% off everything in the store, including clearance.  The dress was on the clearance rack and marked down so low that it ended up being 13.00 (and some change, I forget the exact amount).  It was normally 89.99 (I think...around that, again, I forget).  Anyway...I know I got a great deal and I love this dress.  David loved it too....so all the better.

What am I wearing? Red and White Pokadots

 I. Love. This. Dress!!!!  I saw it at a second hand shop and loved it right away but it was way too big.  So...I left it behind, this was right after Thanksgiving, I believe.  Well I was in the area a few weeks ago and the dress was STILL there!!!!  I think the fact that it was marked at a really large size and not in the plus size area was one reason...or the fact that it was MARKED a larger size than it actually was.  That fact made me leave it behind once.  Well since it was still there, I decided to try it on.  It was pretty big on me and kind of shaped like a big ole sack, but I saw potential.  It was about 10 bucks, much more than I would pay at a second hand shop on a dress that MIGHT have potential.  The plan was to alter, add a belt, and .....here ya have it.  The perfect housedress for winter, with a sweater...and spring without a sweater.  I think I might could even dress it up with stockings and heels...maybe?

I love the "shirt dress" look.  The collar looks great with a sweater.

Sox:  Polo by Ralph Lauren (totally do not go with the outfit but since cleaning out my sox drawer they are about all I got...LOL
Sweater:  I think from Macy's?  a staple in my wardrobe.

Please excuse the "no make-up" look.  My skin has been extra dry the last few weeks and make-up did not help.  We brought the humidifier out and that has helped a bit.

Speaking of "shoes", I have found these Etienne Aigner to be a very good choice.  I found out about them from one of the residents at the Assisted Living community where I used to work.  This woman said that they were her choice for comfort that still looked good.  She was a busy department store window designer, on her feet all the time (when she was younger) so I took her word for it and found a pair.  She tried to give me a few pairs from her closet but they were not my size and accepting gifts was a reason to fire someone...so I had to respectfully decline.

Here are a few pairs I have my eyes on...they are new but have the classic look.

 

I appreciate how these shoes have slip resistant soles.  This is why they were rather popular around the retirement community.  I have a few pairs of Bass loafers that are so slippery when walking on wood or wet pavement rocks.  Also, the soles are well made and of durable material, unlike my Cole Haan shoes that wore out so fast (and they are so pricey!!!!).  They also have a very classic look to them, another reason for their popularity among the retired ladies.

Sambuca 360 in Plano, Texas and Profesor D

We joined a few friends Sambuca 360 in Plano, Texas last night to watch Professor D.   I used to go out to watch Professor D quiet often with a group of friends but have not been in quiet awhile and the first time David has never seen them.  While their show was still very predictable, they are the kind of band that plays a mix of today's top 40 and oldies from the 70's, 80's, and 90's, they are still fun and very danceable....and of course since you know all the words to the popular songs, you can sing along with them.
I loved Sambuca 360.  It was a bit different than the one I had been to in Addison but still very cool.  It is a super club where you can have dinner and drinks, see the show, and dance.  We ordered drinks and the artichoke stuffed with goat cheese.  OMGoodness that was good.  I enjoyed the drinks, as well.  While David stuck to his favorite, Shiner Boch, I tried a few of the more fruity drinks.  One was a bit weird but very refreshing...it was pineapple vodka and crushed cucumber.  David said it was like drinking a facial at a spa...but I enjoyed it.  The crowd was mixed with people our age (late 30s to mid 40s), some younger, some older...everyone fits in.  The drink prices are mid-range (10 to 15.00) as is the bar food.  We had a great time and plan to make this a regular stop for drinks.

 

Professor D

I loved the top I wore.  Can you believe I bought it at JC Penny?  AND it was only 7.00????  I have not found anything at JC Penny in AGES.  I went in looking for a simple white cardigan, if I was to find a CASHMERE cardigan, BONUS....I did not find either a simple or cashmere cardigan ...so search continues for that...but I did score with this top, 2 nighties, and a silkie robe.  Anyway, I really like this top but think the design on the bottom is drawing too much attention to my problem area, my tummie....but it also draws attention to my butt so it is a trade off as David rather enjoys my big ole butt.  My skirt is a pencil skirt I made, shoes from my ever growing collection.  I carried a vintage clutch I picked up while thrifting.
